In its coffee cup, New York has something that’s both genuinely unique and almost timeless—something that makes the city unmistakably itself. When Greek immigrants arrived in New York in the early 20th century, they brought with them a coffee culture that gave rise to the city’s iconic Greek diners and sidewalk pushcarts. In 1963, the Sherri Cup Company aimed to create a to-go coffee cup tailored to these Greek vendors, and marketing director Leslie Buck designed one with blue-and-white colors from the Greek flag, bearing the message “WE ARE HAPPY TO SERVE YOU” in Greek-style letters, flanked by ancient Anthora urns, and bordered with a classic Greek Key pattern. The result was a design that has come to embody New York’s identity in a way no other has. Today, hundreds of thousands of these cups leave delis every day filled with hot coffee, their ubiquity, history, and beloved design securing their status as a true New York icon—and arguably the most famous coffee cup in the world.
